Introducing APEX’s New Service for Knee Pain – Genicular Artery Embolization

APEX Vascular is excited to announce that we have a new addition to our advanced vascular care services – genicular artery embolization (GAE). Genicular artery embolization is a non-invasive, specialized procedure that helps relieve knee pain caused by knee osteoarthritis.

The procedure involves reducing blood flow to the parts of the knee that are causing pain. Blocking this blood flow reduces the amount of inflammation, which can help with pain and other symptoms associated with knee osteoarthritis. GAE is an efficient method of relieving knee pain that does not require surgery or a long recovery.

According to the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology, several studies have supported the effectiveness and safety of GAE for symptomatic knee osteoarthritis, with improvements in pain scores and mobility.

How Does It Work?

Doctor treating patient

GAE is an outpatient medical procedure performed under light sedation, and it typically takes about two hours to complete. Your doctor will look at your blood vessels through an arteriogram to determine if the blood vessels in your knee are causing your pain.

An arteriogram is an X-ray imaging test that doctors can use to look inside blood vessels.

The imaging is conducted using a small needle to evaluate blood flow to the small arteries of the cartilage and knee. If the doctor sees that these blood vessels are the root of the pain through extra blood flow, they are blocked.

How Much Does GAE Cost?

Most insurance providers cover the procedure. Medicare is included in this, but authorization might be required. However, keep in mind that coverage can differ based on your provider and coverage plan, so make sure to reach out to your health insurance provider for more details on this.

To get a more specific cost breakdown from APEX or to check if your insurance will cover the procedure, give us a call or ask our team for more information when you book an appointment.

How Long Does GAE Last?

The actual process of the procedure in our office typically takes less than an hour, and then your immediate recovery will be monitored in-office for a couple of hours by our GAE-trained and experienced medical staff. We recommend that you block off this whole day in your schedule.

Total recovery time is about two weeks, and you can even resume light activities after one week.

The procedure’s effects will last at least a year, but it’s possible that GAE can keep your knee pain at bay for up to approximately four years. To ensure the longest results, make sure to adhere to the post-procedure guidelines that we will provide you with.

Side Effects of GAE

Most side effects of GAE are minor and related to the small incision we make during the procedure. These side effects can include:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Dull pain at the injection site
  • Skin discoloration
  • Puncture site hematoma

In fact, the National Library of Medicine has reported that the side effects of GAE have been extensively investigated with no severe side effects being recorded. However, if you find yourself experiencing any severe symptoms, contact us immediately for a follow-up.
